My name is Nabeela McLeod and I am the daughter of immigrants from Bangladesh. My parents are very hard working people who believed in the American Dream and came to this country so that my brother and I could have a better life. My parents came to America in 1979 and they lived in Illinois and that is where I was born. At the time my father was a graduate student and my parents lived in student housing. I lived in America throughout my early childhood years and then at age 7, my parents moved back to Bangladesh, where my brother was born.
Although we travelled back and forth to America, my brother and I grew up in Bangladesh and I even attended high school there. Growing up in Bangladesh instilled a great sense of family in me and I still have many extended family who live there and with whom I am still very close, not to mention I learned to speak Bangla fluently.
In 1998 I moved back to America to attend college at Pace University at Pleasantville, New York and one year later my parents moved to Clarkstown and have lived there ever since. After graduating from college I attended law school at Western New England School of Law in Massachusetts. In law school I developed an interest in Criminal Law and I decided to work as an intern at the Rockland County District Attorney’s Office for two summers. I was immediately drawn to criminal prosecution and after I graduated from law school I was able to get a job at the District Attorney’s Office as an Assistant District Attorney in 2006. I love working at the District Attorney’s Office. Being a prosecutor has given me a real sense of purpose and I love serving my community to bring justice for crime victims. I have been fortunate enough to prosecute many serious cases including, Murder, Attempted Murder, Burglary, Robbery, Kidnapping, Arson, Assault and Grand Larceny. Last year I successfully conducted a trial for a Double Homicide to bring justice for the two slain women that were murdered.
During my time as a prosecutor I have also been raising a family in Clarkstown. I met my husband while we were both students at Pace University and we married in 2007. We have two beautiful daughters, Maya and Mina, who attend elementary and middle school in Clarkstown and they love to play piano and soccer.
Now, after almost 17 years, I am ready to continue my career of public service in the judiciary. Clarkstown Justice Court was the first court I was assigned to as a new Assistant District Attorney in 2006. Since then, I have dreamed of becoming a judge in the very Courthouse I first began my legal career. I believe I have the experience and the temperament to be a fair and dispassionate judge and I want to seize the opportunity to run for Clarkstown judge to continue serving my community in a different way.
